Everything we create comes from nature, it just depends how far away we’ve gotten from the original inspiration, or how much we’ve forgotten where it all comes from. How many things have been created in this world that have their roots in a seashell? Unfathomable. At this point in life I appreciate a certain directness with the whole thing. But it’s difficult to make art with obvious organic elements that doesn’t inadvertently make nature feel like a cute kitschy concept — something out there that’s not connected to you or me, like a TV show.
This vase feels rooted in something timeless and real to me — its chic creamy color, the presence of the hand that crafted its imperfect shape. Its stacked seashells aren’t a replacement for a lost relationship with nature, but a sweet reminder of a real connection.
