They have so much personality I feel like they’re going to come alive like Lumière in Beauty and the Beast. I’d love to sprawl them out on a long dining table for a big dinner party but alas I do not have the right set up, so these are for you. I paired them with mixed green candles to bring out the earthiness but I think they’d look great with any.

Cynthia MacAdam’s iconic 1983 book, Rising Goddess, imagines an island of women. Free from man and man-made things. Nothing separating woman from nature, nothing separating woman from her nature.

Only naked backs curved like puzzle pieces over ancient rocks. Bare breasts embraced by warm sand. Veins stretched like tree roots across pregnant bellies.

It’s a striking reminder of how perfectly we fit into the natural world and also how alienated we are from it. Case in point: our genitals never get to see the sun. Quite honestly that’s starting to feel like a big big problem to me!

This book will inspire you to do just that, and remind you to connect to your primal nature. It’s one of my favorite ever, and very rare.

I drew the butterfly in my medicine cards (by Jamie Sams & David Carson) to find the inspiration for this note. Here’s my distillation —

The butterfly is the symbol of transformation, which we are in some stage of all of the time. If you want to know what stage of transformation you are in, just look to the stages of the butterfly — egg stage (thought or idea is born), larva stage (decide to bring the thought to life), cocoon stage (developing), birth stage (sharing and enjoying). If you don’t feel that you’re in any of these stages, then that may mean you are refusing to recognize a transformation that needs to be made in your life. When you aim to preserve the comforts of where you are, you’ve lost your courage, forgetting that there is a totally different world outside of the cocoon where the realities of the chrysalis no longer apply.
