Jens Quistgaard was a Danish sculptor and industrial designer who was the creative force behind Dansk Designs from the 1950s to the 1980s. In the early 50s an American entrepreneur came across his revolutionary “Fjord” flatware designs (stainless steel with teak handles) and recognized the commercial potential in the American market. Quistgaard was known for treating everyday items as tiny sculptures and believed that kitchen and dining objects should function harmoniously but also be visually beautiful.
I tend to think these look better with shorter taper candles, as shown in photographs. But the thickness of the taper really matters here. It undeniably looks better when the bottom of the taper sits all the way at the bottom of the glass, but to make that happen you need a candle shaver as most tapers will be too thick.
