We’re all a bit like this teapot these days. At our core we’re these simple organic things, grounded down like a rock, bumpy and misshapen. We are who we are, where we are, with our flaws.
And yet jutting out of us on all sides are these smooth, orderly, man-made appendages. Our identities, phones, jobs, hairstyles and so on. All the ways we’re trying to reach higher, to find order and predictability, to make more sense of ourselves by being more beautiful, more in control, more useful.
But when you step back and just look at this object for what it is, it’s not actually of much use at all. It’s trying to be a teapot but is it really a teapot? It can be! If you want it to be! But really it’s just very beautiful. Exactly as it is, and all it’s striving to be. I think that’s also the story of you and me.
I wasn’t sure why this piece was captivating me so much. Now I get it.
