We’re all a bit like this teapot these days. At our foundation an unmistakably organic form — all of us ultimately grounded down like a rock — bumpy, misshapen and asymmetrical — we are who we are, where we are, with all our imperfections.
And yet jutting out of us are all these smooth, man-made appendages we’ve built on top of ourselves — our identities, our phones, our jobs and hair styles and so on. All the ways we’re trying to reach higher, trying to find order, trying to make more sense of ourselves by trying to be more beautiful, more in control, more useful.
But when you step back and just look at this object for what it is, it’s not of much use at all. It’s trying to be a teapot but is it really a teapot? It can be! If you want it to be! But really, it’s just very beautiful. Exactly as it is, and all it’s striving to be.
I wasn’t sure why this piece was captivating me so much. Now I get it.
