Kava bowls are hand-carved from a single piece of wood and were traditionally used in ceremonial gatherings across Samoa and Fiji to hold a sedative tea drink mixed from the roots of the kava plant. Natives used simply made bowls like this one, but made more ornate versions for tourists who wanted more colorful, decorative bowls.
